BOOKS
I discovered Melanie Rawn in high school. I'll admit that the main reason
I bought it was because of the cover art by Michael
Whelan - it's still my all time favorite book cover. But what I discovered
inside was a wonderfully rich, intricately woven fantasy novel. The whole
concept of Sun Runners is so unlike the standard fantasy 'sorcerers' (although
this series has sorcerers too, but even they are re-invented) that it was
like a breath of fresh air. Rawn's characters are unforgettable although
their twisted genealogy and similar names can at times be confusing (don't
worry, after the first couple books it becomes much easier to keep them
all straight). The plot (which spans two trilogies) is truly epic, plan
on taking your time reading these books, they are to be savored!
Her newest trilogy, Exiles, is I feel her best work yet, but maybe that's
just because two of her main characters remind me so much of my husband
and I! Definitely not as many characters to try and remember as the Dragon
Prince saga but just as epic! I can not wait until the final chapter comes
out (November 2004).
Engrossing, hypnotic, powerful, mesmerizing, breathtaking, spellbinding...these
are just a few of the words that have been used to describe Anne Rice.
I am obsessed with Anne Rice - I have read almost everything she has ever
written (I wait for new books to come out in paperback before I read them
so I am a few books behind). She is the best writer I have ever read, no
matter what the genre. I don't usually get into horror - I am definitely
not a Stephen King fan (with this one exception "The Eyes Of The Dragon" which is actually more fantasy) but I was drawn
to "The Witching Hour" because of my lifelong fascination with witches.
I picked it up, I never put it back down and the rest, as they say, is
history. Anne's writing has a deep, dark, gothic, sensual and yet religious
feel to it - utterly spellbinding and absolutely addictive!

MUSIC
Loreena McKennitt has a wonderful, Celtic folk sound not to be missed.
She did the theme music for UPN's series "Legacy". Her music is poetic
and sometimes haunting (just check out Alfred Noyes's "The Highwayman"
which she set to music).
Sara Brightman is most notably known for her role as Christine in Andrew
Lloyd Webber's musical The Phantom of the Opera. "The voive of an
angel" has been used to describe this versitile saprano and I would have
to agree. Easily gliding between synth-pop, jazz, and high opra Brightman's
voice spins an ethereal spell around the listener. Give her a try, I promise
you wont be dissapointed!
